How to become Mindful of CBD: A Guide

Ladies and gentlemen; we are living in a new and pretty incredible age. Gone are the days where cannabis and its related products would be severely frowned upon; where it was vilified, and was generally the trademark of hippies, stoners and criminals. In retrospect, it’s pretty crazy to think that a plant which grows from the ground and helps us harness our full potential could gain such an intense, notorious rap sheet.  We’re happy to now see that this stigma, propaganda and misinformation has become a thing of the past and the non-psychoactive part of the cannabis plant, CBD, is now being recognised as a “Hero Ingredient” by the likes of Goop Founder, Gwyneth Paltrow


Because of these negative connotations placed on cannabis over the years since the 1920’s when the US demonised the plant, it’s become very easy for the broader population – those with limited exposure to the plant’s astonishing healing powers – to very easily categorize CBD users as “drug users”, without knowing any better. There is a sufficient amount of scientific and medical evidence online which has done loads to speak for the benefits of CBD; all it takes is a quick Google search to dip your toe into the innovative space of CBD and reward yourself with knowledge – and thus begin your journey of becoming mindful of CBD and its users. 


These days; it’s not considered taboo to enjoy a casual lunch date with your loved ones while discussing the effects and benefits of the latest CBD infused product you’ve picked up. The older generation may have a bit of a tough time acclimating to the fact that by simply enjoying an enticingly refreshing CBD-infused Shiso Tea and Blueberry you’re introduced to a world of calm, balance and improved peace- but another good way for the stubborn ones to attempt being mindful, is to at least give it a try. 


While it should be mentioned that there are certainly ‘recreational’ aspects to cannabis when THC, rather than CBD is used, a great deal of confusion stems from the fact that it’s automatically (mistakenly) assumed that any product stemming from a marijuana plant makes you a “weed user”. Becoming more mindful of CBD (and a great way to join in the conversation without sounding totally clueless) is to educate yourself; and this begins with the fundamental understanding that there are two main components in a cannabis plant: a psychoactive molecule called THC (in other words, – the component in marijuana that makes you “high” and a NON-psychoactive agent called CBD… In other words, you won’t be stumbling about with a glazed over look on your face after consuming CBD. 


CBD is the non-psychoactive component, and the one from which the multitude of infused products we know and enjoy for wellness. This leads us to another component of being mindful, and being able to constructively join in the conversation: do you have any idea how many celebrities, lawyers, medical professionals, and leaders of trade and industry actually enjoy cannabis in their work day or downtime? While some may choose to be open and vocal about their habits; the fear of discrimination (often stemming from past stigmas) is generally the motivation for these individuals to practice the utmost discretion. 


The point is; like it or not, it happens – and the facts that the World Health Organisation and lawmakers around the world have either already begun the legalization process, or are seriously contemplating doing so, should reaffirm this. You might be totally opposed to the idea of anything even remotely cannabis-related; yet have a close friend or family member who’s a regular CBD or even THC user – and you might not even have even the faintest idea. This notion in itself should be indication enough that, just because someone is using a cannabis product, it doesn’t automatically turn them into some low-life degenerate. In fact, some of the most successful people alive today are proud advocates of CBD products; and some have even gone as far as to start up their own cannabis brands – so strong is their conviction in the huge potential of this plant within the health and lifestyle industries. As alluded to in the introduction, we are indeed living in a new and pretty incredible age. 


As we’ve also mentioned in another article, medical literature has documented the dramatic benefits of CBD in the fight against some of the worst cases of childhood epilepsy; to be specific, Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. It's been reported that the effects of CBD within these cases include reduced levels of anxiety and psychotic symptoms, inflammation, nausea and seizures. 


While medical and scientific professionals continue to study the potential benefits and long-term effects of CBD (+40 years and beyond), we can all do our part by simply adopting a more open mind – and helping to educate others in the meantime. Who knows; with so many reported health and wellness benefits to using CBD – and with more continually being discovered – we could be on the verge of a completely new chapter in the cannabis story!
